Railway leaders are “not very optimistic” about the breakthrough to avoid strikes on Thursday, as they have criticized a “sense of justification” among union leaders.

Talks on the industrial dispute that led to the biggest shutdown of the British rail network in the generation this week.

But Network Rail CEO Andrew Haines said he does not hope the deal will be reached before the next day of industrial action on Thursday.

He told the Telegraph: “Are we wild optimists? No. Are we struggling to find a way through this? Definitely. ”

Industry sources argue that union leaders cling to archaic work practices that imply tasks such as e.g. a “socket replacement” would require a team of nine workers.

Other work practices strongly advocated by union leaders include railroad workers who are entitled to a 12-minute walk for one minute of walking and engineers who cannot move 500 meters away from their dedicated parts, sources said.

Haines said such work practices were “a reflection of how introspective parts of the British railways are”.

He added: “And that is what is so catastrophic about these strikes.

“A sense of justification that does not want to address the fact that the railways are facing a £ 2 billion deficit.

“If we insist on this, it is a sign of death for our industry. We will become increasingly irrelevant. So we need to say, “There is a way forward as we modernize and create safer but more valuable jobs.”
