American swimmer Justin Ress went through a whirlwind of emotions after first touching the wall in the 50m backstroke final at the World Championships in Budapest – only to be disqualified moments later before the victory came back.

American backstroke Justin Ress first touches the wall with a time of 24.12 s – and is then disqualified for finishing the race underwater.
After reviewing the video, Ress was disqualified when the footage showed he finished the race completely underwater, which is illegal in backstroke disciplines.
Armstrong received gold, and 17-year-old Pole Ksawery Masiuk went from bronze to silver.
“I am very disappointed that my teammate was disqualified and I hope the American team’s protest will be successful,” Armstrong said.
His wish came true as Ress’s victory was restored when the championship jury upheld the appeal.

Australian Isaac Cooper, 18, rounded out the race, while Australian Mollie O’Callaghan defeated world record holder Sarah Sjostrom and became the youngest world champion in the 100m freestyle in 30 years.
She won six medals at the championships, three of them gold, as the Australian finished with a total of 17 medals, despite missing some of her biggest names.
Americans Hunter Armstrong (L) and Justin Ress (R) celebrate finishing first and second in the 50m backstroke final.
Ress was a three-time NCAA champion with the University of North Carolina and in 2017 broke the record in the 50m backstroke with a time of 24.41 and beat two past Olympians in the race.
America finished the championship with 45 medals, 17 of them gold, which is a record swimming rally for the US.
