Any degenerative joint disease can make regular things difficult. One such major joint problem is arthritis. There are many types of arthritis, but the most common is osteoarthritis. It affects the ends of the bones and can affect any joint that forms the joints, causing movement problems in arthritis patients. It is usually recognized by symptoms such as pain (at rest and when moving the joint), swelling, stiffness, reduced range of motion and visible deformities.

Healthshots contacted Dr. To Aman Khero, Surgeon – Geriatric Care at Care4Parents, who presented 10 things to avoid when suffering from arthritis.

Dr Khera says: “Exercise has always been important for arthritis patients and rightly so. However, it is important to understand and know what not to do. Because the disease affects the joints, certain movements or incorrect posture during to exercise it can further damage the joint and worsen symptoms. You have to be very careful when doing the exercises.”

Important tips that arthritis patients should always follow:

  1. Arthritis patients should avoid exercises like running and jogging. This causes a direct impact on the knee joint, which can cause further damage and worsen the pain.
  2. Similarly, vigorous aerobics, jumping and skipping are best avoided. Avoid lifting heavy loads as this also puts pressure on the joints.
  3. Sports where sudden movements or changes of direction occur, such as tennis, basketball, volleyball, should be avoided. A sudden change in movement puts pressure on the joints and thus worsens the condition.
  4. It is best to avoid going up and down stairs. Avoid walking up stairs, especially since there is a direct impact on the knee joint. Use the elevator whenever available.
  5. “Walking on uneven and uneven surfaces and mountain hiking also puts uneven pressure on the joints, so it’s better to avoid them,” says Dr. Khera.
  6. Ill-fitting or ill-fitting footwear, high heels should be avoided.
  7. Sit in the correct posture. Improper posture can cause joint pain. Squatting or sitting cross-legged is very harmful to the knee joints. Avoid as much as possible.
  8. All exercises should be done in moderation. Excessive exercise, aggressive movements during exercise should be avoided. Remember, if you experience joint pain during exercise, stop immediately. Stop the exercise if pain occurs in the joint during the exercise.
  9. “Some people take pain pills before exercise. This should be completely avoided, as these drugs mask pain, which is a warning sign,” advises Dr. Khera.
  10. Hot wraps, hot yoga should be avoided. Remember, heat increases inflammation and worsens swelling. This will worsen the symptoms of arthritis.
