Motorists are queuing for hours to save 25p a liter at the country’s “cheapest petrol station”.

Trago Mills petrol station in Newton Abbot, Devon, has cut petrol prices to 164.9p a liter – almost 25p cheaper than the national average of 189.5p, according to the RAC.

Filling a standard 55 liter tank would cost £90.70 at the station, a saving of £14 compared to £104.22 at the average garage.

A Shell petrol station is also selling diesel at 179.9p a litre, more than 17p cheaper than the 197.5p average at government yards.

A motorist could drive 50 miles or 100 miles round trip to buy petrol at 164.9p and still save compared to the average price. This is based on the average car getting 11.57 miles per liter of fuel.

Wholesale petrol prices have fallen in recent weeks and have been at 80p a liter or less for the past three days, down from a peak of 100p, according to motoring body the AA.

However, most service stations did not pass the savings on to customers and were accused of profiteering.

The RAC’s Simon Williams said: “These are the cheapest fuel prices we’ve seen and are much more in line with what motorists should be charged given the steep fall in wholesale petrol and diesel prices.”

He added: “The reality is that most retailers are still they charge way more than they should it looks pretty inexcusable. We are calling on all major fuel retailers to reduce their prices to reflect the lower costs they will pay to purchase fuel.”

Limes petrol station in Walkden, Salford has reduced the price of petrol to 169.9 a liter of petrol and cars are also queuing for hours to fill up.

The AA’s Luke Bosdet said most petrol stations were holding off on cutting pump prices to “get another weekend of increased motorist profits”.

He added: “We are afraid that most of the front courts are holding back waiting for the government announces a reduction in fuel tax. These lobbies see a clear opportunity to grab a fleeting holiday trade, and they grab it.”
