According to a 2018 study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, people who take regular showers or steam showers are more likely to be in excellent health, stress-free, rested more, sleep better, and are happier. . HealthShots spoke with Dr. Vinay Singh, Senior Consultant Dermatology, Paras Hospital, Gurugram, to understand how you can reduce the negative effects of over-showering.

Dr Singh says: “Despite the many benefits of bathing, many people shower more than once a day. It is best to continue with proper bathing habits, as this activity can be harmful to your health.”

Here are 5 bathing rules to follow if you shower several times a day:

1. Bathing with hot water

Bathe in lukewarm water every day, no matter how hot or humid the weather is outside. “Baking in a hot water bath causes your body to become hyperthermic, which means it heats up,” says Dr. Singh. As a result, it can help relieve muscle stiffness, reduce stress and pain, and relieve congestion. It can also help you sleep deeply and cleanse your body even better. If you have a cold and cough, take a warm bath.

However, avoid bathing in very hot water. Bathing in very hot water, it can damage your skin barrier, dry out your skin, cause rashes and irritation, and even cause skin to split. So, bathe in lukewarm or slightly warm water.

2. The shower should be short

However, just because you have to bathe every day in summer or monsoon doesn’t mean you have to overdo it. The purpose of showering is to moisturize and cleanse the skin, but prolonged showering can strip the skin of its natural oils and expand pores, which can lead to dry and itchy skin. Therefore, bathe only for a maximum of ten minutes.

4. Moisturize

Perhaps nothing is more crucial than hydration. As soon as you dry off, get yourself a decent moisturizer and apply it liberally all over your body. Many individuals choose to apply glycerin, which can also help retain moisture in the skin. For moisturize your skin, you can also use homemade moisturizers like ghee, olive oil, coconut oil etc. which are easily available. But make sure that the product is in its purest form and not adulterated.

5. Clean up

Regardless of the weather, it is imperative to clean the things that keep you healthy to prevent illness. It is important to regularly clean the bathroom, especially the drains, taps and showers. Dr Singh says, “You should also keep soap dispensers and bathroom cabinets clean. Above all, you must always maintain absolutely everything that is in regular and direct contact with your skin. You should wash and dry your towels often, as well as clean or change your loofah to prevent fungus.”
