Work from home during heat waves could be more dangerous and reduce productivity compared to going to the office, the government’s climate change advisers have warned.
The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) has warned that working from home could increase the risk by exposing people to high temperatures for longer periods, despite Minister Kit Malthouse warned the workers beforehand against traveling to the office due to levels of disruption on trains and roads.
“This may be the moment to work from home,” he said. The CCC has warned that heat-related deaths could triple in coming decades as extreme temperatures like this week become more common by 2050.
Around a fifth of UK homes already overheat in the summer, with the problem particularly severe in new builds with high levels of insulation but poor ventilation. The CCC warned that overheating can affect worker productivity through discomfort and heat stress, defined as “when the body’s means of controlling internal temperature begin to fail”.
Like temperatures reached a record 40Cunions called for the legal maximum temperature at the workplace 25C to protect employees.
