Why is it running?

Mrs Truss advertises herself as a Thatcherite, promising tax cuts, experience in foreign policy and a track record.

Notable people publicly supporting Truss:

Tom Tugendhat

The endorsement of the chairman of the foreign affairs select committee is significant as he is popular among Conservative party members and a leading figure in the One Nation group of centre-right Tory MPs.

Ben Wallace

The defense minister said it was the support of Mrs. Truss “Not because she’s a shrewd saleswoman, but because she’s genuine,” and he also pointed to Mrs Truss’ pledge to increase defense spending to three per cent of Britain’s GDP by the end of the decade.

Jacob Rees-Mogg

The Brexit Opportunities Minister backed Mrs Truss, saying she was a “strong Brexiteer” and a “real Eurosceptic” who she had always supported in Cabinet.

Nadine Dorries

Gaining the support of the Culture Secretary and Boris Johnson loyalist has cemented Ms Truss’s place as a ‘Boris Continuity’ candidate.

Kwasi Kwarteng

The business secretary was another cabinet stalwart to back Mrs Truss and was tasked with introducing her at her official launch, where he described her as a “true blue tax-cutting Conservative”.

Iain Duncan-Smith

The former Tory party leader remains an influential figure as he heads the ‘One Nation’ group of MPs, which represents the more moderate wing of the party.

Suella Braverman

Just hours after the Attorney General was dropped from the leadership race, she pledged her support for Ms Truss and encouraged at least some of her supporters to go with her, notably MP Steve Baker.

Simon Clarke

Securing the support of the Chief Secretary to the Treasury – who worked under Mr Sunak – was a useful endorsement of Ms Truss’s economic vision.
