Many of us wear an eye mask to block out the light when we sleep, but what if your mask could also be singing lullabies, massaging and using the latest NASA technology?
Enter a new wave of high-tech eye technology that promises just that. These ‘smart’ masks claim to help us nod off by enlisting the support of other senses – touch, heat and sound – to create a relaxing sleep environment.
With 60 percent of people reporting an increase in sleep problems after the pandemic, it’s no wonder we’re turning to futuristic options.
Last year, the global eye mask market grew by £8.2m to £1.7bn and over the next three years almost a third of growth will come from the tech sector, according to market research Technavio.

Are gadgets really the answer to a good night’s sleep? “High-tech solutions can help improve your night’s sleep,” says Sammy Margo, author of The Good Sleep Guide. “Experience technology options, but don’t forget other factors such as your bedtime routine, diet and screen time can affect the quality and quantity of your sleep.”

Manta Sleeping Mask (£30, mantasleep.uk)

The Manta Sleep Mask uses breathable materials to provide maximum light and sound blocking fit without tugging your hair or putting pressure on your eyeballs.
It may look low-tech, but it uses breathable materials to ensure maximum light and sound-exclude fit without tugging your hair or pressing on your eyeballs: adjustable eyecups keep the longest lashes from squishing and allow even the most intense quick sighting. REM sleep. Earplugs are included, but cold and hot eye patches must be ordered separately.
VERDICT: Wonderfully comfortable and full dimming without straining the eyes, but too expensive to justify the lack of smart features. 2/5
Lullaby BABY
Musicozy Sleep Headphones (£20.99, amazon.co.uk)
Fall asleep singing along to your playlist with the snugly hidden speakers connected via Bluetooth. Super soft, washable fleece gently wraps around the head instead of pressing on the eye sockets or ears.
VERDICT: It makes up for in compression power what it lacks in massage features, and being able to set your listening to a snooze-inducing tune or podcast really helps you sleep. One for the side sills because it’s so comfortable at any angle. Simple volume control on the forehead means you don’t have to search for your phone in the dark. 4/5
HOT CONTESTANT
Renpho True View Eye Massager (£54.99, uk.renpho.com)

Renph’s new model brings the Bladerunner vibe to the mask game with its wraparound mirrored visor and newly introduced vision windows
Renph’s new model brings the Bladerunner vibe to the mask game with its wrap-around mirrored visor and newly introduced vision windows. The heat massage option supposedly gets rid of bags under the eyes with an acupoint massage.
VERDICT: Simple controls on the side and calm voice prompts while you choose your options put the Renpho mask at the fore. A selection of music tracks is built in — but you can also connect them via Bluetooth. It also conveniently folds in half into a soft bag. But the viewing window is a bit plasticky and too bulky for anything other than napping on your back. 4/5
ZARJE’S RUNNER
Sound Oasis Illumy (£129, relax-uk.com)
As reflected in the price, this is the gold standard of circadian light eye masks. It incorporates NASA technology pioneered on the International Space Station that adjusts astronauts’ body clocks by using the colors of light to mimic a day on Earth.
Once you install the app and set the alarm, you’ll see a gradually dimming sunset that will encourage your mind and body to rest. In the morning, the mask brightens itself and imitates the action of the sun.
VERDICT: Regardless of the revolutionary technology, this is let down by the cheap feel and need to play the app. But for travelers, it’s a winner: the gentle dawn of the day without time lag is almost worth the money alone. 4/5
SPACE AGE NONSENSE
BREE iDream5S Eye and Neck Massage Helmet (£199.99, amazon.co.uk)

The BREO iDream5S eye and neck massage helmet performs a deep kneading massage of the eyes, upper neck and scalp, combining heat compression and ‘intelligent air pressure’.
They say it’s the future – the ultimate multifunctional and automatic massage mask: 150 pressure points iDream 5S performs a deep kneading massage of the eyes, upper neck and scalp areas, combining heat compression and ‘intelligent air pressure’ and you for a more restful sleep.
VERDICT: It’s not for the faint of heart: while the helmet’s grip starts to loosen up, the head massage feels like a witch’s claws scraping all the way to my scalp, and the neck massage never quite gets there. What does work is the eye socket and shadow flash that makes you feel like a million bucks, but the volume and price makes it too expensive and impractical. 1/5
