Manchester United Women are on the verge of appointing Brighton & Hove Albion’s Polly Bancroft as their first manager of football, while Telegraph Sport also understands they will soon unveil the signing of England striker Nikita Parris from Arsenal.
Bancroft is currently managing director at Brighton and has extensive experience at the Football Association and UEFA, where she previously worked as a business development specialist. Her arrival will be very important for Manchester United from a structural and organizational point of view.
Since rebranding its senior women’s team in 2018, the Women’s Super League has not had a role specifically dedicated to a women’s team.
But the move will allow John Murtough, United’s director of football, to focus even more on recruitment and the key tasks expected of him at the club, helped by the appointment of Andy O’Boyle as deputy director of football at the end of May
The club, whose women’s side have finished fourth in the WSL for three consecutive seasons, began the interview process shortly after Christmas to find a head of women’s football. It is understood that Bancroft will take up her role after her official contract with the Sussex club expires.
Parris, 28, was part of the England squad that won the European Championship at Wembley on Sunday, coming on as a substitute in the 2-1 extra-time victory over Germany.
She has been heavily linked with a move and Telegraph Sport understands the former Champions League winner with French club Lyon is set to make an appearance at Manchester United this week.
The 2019 Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year, who won the WSL title with Manchester City in 2016, started her career at Everton and scored 15 goals in 67 appearances for the senior England team.
