In 2021, everyone’s favorite salad lunch spot just got hot with CEO Jonathan Neman posted on LinkedIn what many interpreted as a disparaging comment. What if we made the food that makes us sick illegal,” he wrote, seemingly thoughtfully. “What if we taxed processed food and refined sugar to pay for the impact of the pandemic?” Unfortunately, he followed that up with “78% of hospitalizations for COVID are obese and overweight people,” and wondered if there was an “underlying problem” with that statistic.

If you don’t remember this scandal from the 90s (which late night talk show hosts had a lot of fun with back then), here’s a refresher. A 79-year-old woman is suing McDonald’s for $20,000 over burns she suffered when she accidentally spilled coffee on her lap. in fact she actually suffered third degree burns which sent her to the hospital, nearly killed her, and required two years of treatment. McDonald’s once had a policy of keeping their coffee hot—between 180°F and 190°F, apparently to avoid refilling—and received hundreds of complaints before this lawsuit. McDonald’s lost and had to pay $600,000 and lower the temperature.

Recently, chefs and restaurant owners condemned one of the biggest dishes in hamburger joints: the iconic Martin’s potato roll. Why? Reports indicated that members of the Martin family they have ties to far-right Pennsylvania state senator Doug Mastrian. Shake Shack is one of the bun’s biggest buyers, and while it advertises itself as an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and racial equality, the chain has made no move or public announcement to change its relationship with Martin. As of this story, they are still under attack.

The founder of Papa John’s pizzeria already had a reputation for being controversial, and in 2018 it cost him the company. Schnatter commented in 2017 that the NFL had not done enough to prevent players from kneeling during the anthem in protest. He was forced to step down as CEO in January 2018however, he was still chairman of the board until it emerged that he had used the “n” word during a May 2018 conference call. He was kicked out of the company and his image removed from all marketing materials.

For 15 years, Jared Fogle was the inspirational and popular spokesperson for Subway, sharing his before and after photos and telling the world that he lost over 200 pounds just by eating the chain’s sandwiches. however Fogle capitalized on his fame and the non-profit The Jared Foundation, which had him visiting schools to talk about obesity, for truly dark and disturbing purposes. In 2015, he was found guilty of child pornography and paying for sexual relations with minors. Fogle was promptly dropped by Subway when the charges were announced, and Fogle will be in prison until 2029.

The Denny’s restaurant chain came under heavy attack in 1993 when six black Secret Service officers they were allegedly not served breakfast in the restaurant, while their white counterparts received their meals immediately. Agents guarded President Clinton at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. The chain eventually settled a class-action lawsuit accusing them of not serving black customers or forcing them to pay up front.

In the 2000s, the burrito chain had a slew of food safety issues, but the one that really spooked diners was A 2015 norovirus outbreak in Boston that sickened 141 people. At the time, prosecutors said the outbreak was likely the result of a sick employee “who, after vomiting in the restaurant, was ordered to continue working in violation of company policy.” Gross.
