In her penultimate application, Ms Hall, who was seeking spousal support, claimed she did not know the full extent of her ex-husband’s assets, with the documents saying her divorce application would be amended “once the information has been verified”.

Records show a judge issued an order in July regarding Mr. Murdoch’s financial records.

Ms Hall and Murdoch are said to have signed a prenuptial agreement.

The Australian-born tycoon, who owns a number of media outlets including The Times, New York Post, Fox News and the Wall Street Journal, is valued at $17.7bn (£14bn).

The Murdoch family’s stake in the empire is held by a trust with voting rights split between his four eldest children: Lachlan, Elisabeth, James and Prudence.

Ms. Hall’s application states that she currently lives on the property of Mr. Murdoch, a $37 million, 13-acre vineyard in Bel Air built in the 1930s by Oscar-winning Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz director Victor Fleming.

She is said to have told friends that she was “broken” and “devastated” by the breakdown of her marriage and that she blamed Mr Murdoch’s grown children for the divorce, the news outlet reported.

“They had a lot to say about it and the role it played in his personal life, which seemed like a nasty surprise. They obviously didn’t trust her,” the source said.

The divorce would be Mr Murdoch’s fourth and Ms Hall’s second after her previous marriage to Rolling Stone Mick Jagger ended in an annulment. Ms. Hall is expected to receive more than $40 million in the settlement.
