Chelsea’s German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger is set to restart cancer treatment after four years in remission and faces a spell on the sidelines.

The 31-year-old was first diagnosed with thyroid cancer in November 2017, but resumed playing for her former club Birmingham City after successful surgery in early 2018. Since then, she has helped Chelsea win three consecutive Women’s Super League titles.

“I wanted to directly inform the fans that unfortunately, after four years of living without cancer, my thyroid disease has come back,” Berger, who was part of the German team at this summer’s women’s EP, announced on social media on Tuesday.

“I’ve said before that as an athlete you have to fight every day to be the best and that’s something I will continue to do and hopefully by sharing my journey I can help others who find themselves in a similar situation. .

“I am working closely with my club doctor and specialist in London and my treatment will start this week. I am still confident that my treatment will be as effective as last time and I look forward to getting back on the pitch and seeing you at Kingsmeadow and at Stamford Bridge. “

Berger’s former team-mate at Birmingham, current Manchester United centre-back Aoife Mannion, reacted to the news saying: “I wish you all the best with your treatment, your recovery in Birmingham was a testament to your character and I hope it can be the same again.”

Liverpool, the England women’s national team and European governing body Uefa are also among those who have sent their best wishes online.

A statement from her club Chelsea said: “Everyone at Chelsea is behind her at this difficult time and the club will provide her with all the support possible to help her make a speedy recovery. We look forward to seeing her back in front of the Blues goal as soon as possible.”
