If all goes according to plan, NASA expects to launch Artemis II, a manned flyby of the lunar surface, in 2023 before American astronauts land on the surface in 2025 as part of Artemis III.

The rocket is very sensitive to weather conditions and NASA has to consider temperature, window and rain before allowing a launch.

According to the launch mission statement: ‘Although the overall lightning threat appears to be low, this onshore flow regime will promote scattered showers over Atlantic waters through the launch window.’

“As a result, the main weather issues for Monday morning’s attempt will be the cumulus cloud rule, the surface electric field rule and the flight through precipitation limitation,” a weather official wrote.

A NASA spokesman suggested that conditions that would normally lead to the cancellation of a manned launch may not apply to an unmanned launch.

Project Artemis will land astronauts on the moon every year until the end of the decade, starting in 2025. At that stage, the cost of Project Artemis will rise to $93 billion.

These astronauts will build a space station and base at the Moon’s south pole. The technologies used in this mission will help NASA in its ultimate goal, a manned mission to Mars. These missions are planned for the early 2040s.

The project went way over budget from the very beginning. In 2012, it was estimated that SLC would cost $6 billion to build and each launch would cost $500 million.

In August 2022, the bill to build the rocket was $20 billion, while the launches will cost $4.1 billion, reports CNBC.

If successful, Artemis I will hover 60 miles above the Moon’s surface, in 2024 Artemis II will fly past the Moon with four astronauts on board. By 2025, astronauts are expected to set foot on the moon.

NASA’s inspector general said earlier this year that 2026 is a more realistic target for landing humans on the moon.

Artemis III, which will be the title of the moon landing mission, will likely include a capsule built by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. In 2021, NASA awarded Musk a $2.9 billion contract to develop the project.

These astronauts would be the first humans to walk on the surface since 1972.

The SLS is similar to a rocket plane in that it is equipped with two solid propellant rocket engines on either side containing liquid hydrogen and oxygen.

The boosters give the SLS, which will weigh 5.7 million pounds when fully fueled, nearly nine million pounds of thrust. Which is about 15 percent more than the Saturn V. It can lift 90 tons into Earth orbit and 27 tons to the Moon.

After the launch of Artemis I, SLS will be the most powerful rocket ever launched. The current version of the missile is called Block 1. The next version will be called Block 1B.

It will be accompanied by the Orion module at launch, will stand more than 320 feet tall and contain more than 700,000 liters of cryogenic fuel.

Orion, built by Lockheed-Martin, is the lander that will take astronauts to the Moon. Although similar in appearance to the landing craft used by the early Apollo astronauts, it is larger inside and equipped with the latest technology.

Astronauts can spend up to 21 days in the capsule without having to tether anywhere.

Like its Apollo ancestor, Orion has a heat shield to protect the astronauts from the friction caused by re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.

The craft will land using parachutes, which slow it down from 25,000 miles per hour to about 20 miles per hour to bring the astronauts safely back to earth in the Pacific Ocean, near Baja California.

The total length of the Artemis I mission is 42 days, during which time it will travel 1.3 million miles. Its main goal is to ensure the rocket is operating as planned before astronauts board in 2023.

During the mission, SLS will launch Orion, where it will hover about 60 miles above the Moon’s surface. Three mannequins will be on board as NASA tries to determine the effects of travel on the human body.

Most importantly, at the end of the mission, NASA scientists will watch Orion cope with its return to Earth as it re-enters the atmosphere at 30 times the speed of sound.

NASA officials said testing Orion’s heat shield is the most important part of the mission.

At a press conference on August 3, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said: ‘It’s an ablative heat shield and the only way to test it is to get it out and let it come in at Mach 32.’

He continued: ‘Orion will return home faster and hotter than any spacecraft to date.’
