Phillip Schofield became an unlikely star of Kremlin propaganda on Tuesday after offering ITV viewers the chance to win money to help pay their energy bills.

“This week we have our usual cash prizes, but you can also win some extra cash to pay for energy bills by the end of the year,” he told viewers during the show’s “spin to win” segment.

“Wow, this is very important now,” said Holly Willoughby, Schofield’s co-host.

Russian state television has leapfrogged the competition to celebrate energy prices are spreading across Europewhich Moscow blames on Western sanctions.

The competition, in which Schofield and Willoughby offered to pay their energy bills for four months, was featured on the national broadcaster’s morning news programme.

Her host, Olga Skabeyeva, seemed impressed by the desperate situation many households now find themselves in.

“On the Wheel of Fortune morning show, TV viewers across the UK can now win their energy bills paid off in full,” she said.

“On top of that, you could win £1,000 or even £3,000, but judging by the skyrocketing energy prices, which have gone up by 80 per cent at one point, it’s obviously much better to get paid for your energy bills.”
