England national football team in the Nations League: what TV channel are the matches on?

Gareth Southgate will allow England players to meet later than usual next week so they can attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II with their families.

Before international matches, the England national team usually assembles on Sunday evening or Monday morning, after the final round of Premier League matches. But with a funeral takes place on Monday the English selector postponed the meeting.

The players will not have to report to England’s base at St George’s Park until Monday night ahead of Friday’s Nations League game away to Italy. That game is followed by a Nations League game at home to Germany on Monday, which will be England’s last game before heading to the World Cup in November.

The delay, which FA staff also later reported, will not affect England’s training schedule as they are not due to start preparations until Tuesday.

Out of respect, Southgate and the Football Association, which is chaired by the Prince of Wales and patronized by the late Queen, have also decided to cancel a press conference due to take place on Thursday, September 14, as he announces his squad for the Games.

Southgate is likely to pick a 26-man squad – the same number he will have to pick for the World Cup – that will be as close as possible to the squad he has in mind for the tournament.

Without injured pair Jordan Henderson and Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson, who has been in stunning form since his loan move from Manchester United to Nottingham Forest, is likely to be called upon as the third goalkeeper behind Nick Pop and Aaron Ramsdale.

John Stones is suspended for the match against Italy, but Harry Maguire is also likely to be included despite limited playing time for United. However, Southgate is considering recalling Eric Dier, who has not played for England for almost two years but has been in fine form at the heart of Antonio Conte’s three-man central defense at Tottenham Hotspur.

Attention is also focused on whether it will be first call-up for Brentford’s Ivan Toney although that would come as a surprise given Southgate is likely to retain confidence in Tammy Abraham as Harry Kane’s sidekick.

Southgate could find room for all three in his squad, and they are also considering recalling Marcus Rashford, while also looking at his United team-mate Jadon Sancho, who has had a strong start to the season at United under Erik ten Hag, playing as a centre-forward. Rashford has not been selected for England since November 2021, a month after Sancho was last selected. A fit-again Ben Chilwell is likely to be included, but there will be concerns that Luke Shaw has lost his place at United and will be vulnerable.
