Newly-promoted Liverpool underlined their superb fighting qualities with a shock victory over defending champions Chelsea to provide a major upset on the opening weekend of the Women’s Super League season.

Katie Stengel’s two penalties saw the league newcomers produce a stunning save to claim a statement victory over a lackluster Chelsea side in front of a record 3,006-strong home crowd at Prenton Park.

Stengel, a 30-year-old American forward making her WSL debut, canceled out Fran Kirby’s third-minute strike with a penalty of her own after Millie Bright was fouled in the box. She then remained brave to convert again from the spot after Kadeisha Buchanan pounced on her five minutes from time as Chelsea’s title defense got off to the worst possible start.

It was the perfect way for Liverpool to celebrate their return to the WSL under manager Matt Beard, who led the Reds to back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014.

β€œIt’s great that we started with three points at home; that was a stronghold for us last year and today we made Chelsea uncomfortable and difficult,” an excited Beard told Sky Sports. “Chelsea like to play through and then circle, so we stopped that [from] and we knew we could hurt them on the counter attack. Fortunately for us, it paid off.”
