Rachel Daly scored twice on her “dream” debut as Aston Villa scored a sensational win over Manchester City to get their Women’s Super League campaign off to the perfect start.
It was a fine individual performance from former Houston Dash, who was one of Villa’s key signings in the summer and played at full-back during the Lionesses’ victorious Euro campaign.
The 30-year-old contributed to three of her side’s four goals and inspired Villa to their first win over City, who had won all four of their previous meetings until Sunday, 17-0 on aggregate.
“It’s a dream start,” said Daly, whose tackle on Spain midfielder Laia Aleixandri led to Villa’s 22nd-minute opener through Alisha Lehmann. “To get on the scoresheet not once but twice is obviously nice, but more importantly to win at home against one of the best teams in this league. We wanted to be brave, take risks, create chances and make this a terrible place to play and I think we it also succeeded.”
Daly took advantage of some sloppy City defending to curl a sweet strike into the top corner to double her side’s lead, but a mistake at the other end by Hannah Hampton, who diverted Laura Coombs’ shot into her own net, sparked the City defence.
Khadija Shaw equalized shortly after the break and 90 seconds later Coombs fired home from Chloe Kelly’s cross to give the visitors the lead. But their precious lead lasted all of three minutes after French midfielder Kenza Dali equalized for a determined Ward side with a deflected shot from 20 yards. The hosts enjoyed the last word with Daly netting a second to hand City their first opening day defeat in eight years.
