About 230 pilot whales beached at Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania on Wednesday, September 21.

Tragically, authorities said only 35 pods had survived as of Thursday morning.

The stranding is the second to occur in Tasmania in days after 14 dead sperm whales washed ashore on King Island, and comes two years to the day of the largest mass stranding in Australiahistory in port.

On 21 September 2021, 470 finned pilot whales were found in Macquarie Harbor and 111 were rescued in a week-long effort.
