MrPs criticized the announcement of Theresa Coffey’s appointment, arguing that just because the government is setting a new two-week target, it will not address the key issues of underfunding and high demand.

Ms Coffey told Times Radio that the government wanted to recruit more GPs and that it was part of a “longer-term plan that has already been set out”.

She said: “We definitely want more GPs, more clinicians, it’s all part of our longer term plan which has already been set out.

“At the moment I’m focusing on the ABCDs – ambulances, backlogs, care, doctors and dentists – but I’m very aware that almost everyone who accesses the NHS does so through primary care, through their GP, and that’s why I put so much emphasis on what I’m going to do is to try to help patients get what they expect from GPs and to help GPs achieve that as well.’
