Joe Biden, 79, faced another public embarrassment Wednesday night when he appeared to lose his way as he walked off stage after his remarks at a Global Fund conference.
As the applause followed, the American president started to walk off the stage before suddenly stopping and looking around with a look of confusion on his face.
He then appeared to be asking the people on the floor how to get off the stage and took a few stuttering steps.
‘Joe Biden is completely lost on stage. Scary and sad,” Steve Guest, communications adviser to the Senator Ted Cruzhe tweeted from the scene.
At the event, a man stepped up to the microphone and said, “Uh, Mr. President, thank you,” as he wandered around the stage.
This caused further confusion for the president, who slowly walked away from the stage, pausing every few steps to look back at the speaker and thank him for his leadership and remarks.
The footage of the awkward side steps went viral on social media as another example of doubt about Biden’s physical and mental fitness for the presidency. During his 60 Minutes interview on Sunday, Biden dismissed suggestions that he is too old or unfit to run again in 2024 – saying ‘watch me.’
President Joe Biden, 79, looked lost in the awkward moment as he started to walk off stage after his remarks at the Global Fund conference in New York before suddenly stopping, turning back and looking around the room in confusion
A speaker at the Global Fund Conference said during Biden’s confusing departure on Wednesday: “At the end of such an important event, the word ‘thank you’ seems kind of inadequate. But for all the millions whose lives will be saved, for the communities where lives will be changed – thank you , President Biden.”
People on Twitter called the video “sad” and said Biden was acting “weird” and “awkward” and speculated that he looked “lost” or “didn’t know where he was.”
The whole ordeal happened after he made remarks at the 7th Global Fund Replenishment Conference held in New York to fight AIDS, HIV, tuberculosis and malaria.
Other awkward encounters were also caught on camera, including two separate instances where he reached out to shake hands with an unseen person.
At an event at the White House, fresh out of a COVID-19 quarantine, Biden seemed to forget that he had already shaken hands with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and extended his hand a second time with a puzzled look on his face. when the New York Democrat turned away .
It happened again in April after finishing a speech in North Carolina, where he turned to his right and held out his arm while staring into space and wandering around the stage before leaving.
Many also pointed to Biden’s mishap in August, when he struggled for nearly a minute while trying to put on his jacket — and continued to struggle even with first lady Jill Biden’s help — as further evidence of his deteriorating physical condition.
Biden’s physical misfortunes have become a concern of Republicans, who argue that he is mentally and physically unfit for office. Pictured: Biden falls down the stairs as he boards Air Force One
The president also fell off his bike while on a ride in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware in June 2022
He then ditched his sunglasses, leading to a generally awkward disembarkation from Marine One after a storm damage survey in Kentucky.
One of Biden’s biggest embarrassments came while vacationing on his bike in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where he completely fell off his bike and crashed to the ground.
Many believe Biden is unfit for the job — a recent poll found that 59 percent of Americans are “very” or “somewhat concerned” about the president’s mental health.
Biden has rejected criticism that he is too old and mentally unfit to be president.
‘Some people think you’re not cut out for the job,’ began CBS correspondent Scott Pelley, ‘and when you hear that, I wonder what you’re thinking.’
‘Look after me,’ replied America’s oldest president. ‘Honestly, that’s all I’m thinking.’
“If you think I don’t have enough energy or mental acuity, then you know, that’s one thing,” he said. “The other thing is, you know, just watch and, you know, stick to my schedule. Do what I do.’
He continued: ‘I respect the fact that people would say, you know, ‘You’re old.’ But I think it has to do with how much energy you have and whether the work you’re doing is consistent with what any person of any age could do.”
While observing the aftermath of the devastating storms that hit Kentucky, he stepped out of Marine One (above) and struggled for 30 seconds to put on a jacket — also with help from First Lady Jill Biden. He then dropped the sunglasses on the floor after fastening his jacket to his body
Twice, Biden was caught on video extending his hand to shake hands, but there was no one to return the gesture. Pictured: Biden goes to shake hands after comments on the economy in North Carolina in April, but received a tumultuous reception
Despite his comments, Biden would not commit to running for re-election in 2024, though he told Pelley that was the current plan.
“My intention, as I said at the beginning, is to run again,” he said. ‘But that’s just the intention. But is it a solid decision to run again? We’ll see about that.”
Some of Biden’s mental lapses include repetition, forgetting names and locations, and telling long, rambling stories that seem out of touch with reality.
In recent months, he has spun a story in which he claims he was appointed to the Naval Academy by a senator who eventually replaced him — events that never actually happened.
He is also often mocked for leaning into the microphone and whispering words or phrases for emphasis during his public remarks.
Not only are physical and mental defects a point of attack for Republicans, but they have also caused embarrassment on the world stage.
At one point, Biden welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin to carry out a “minor incursion” into Ukraine.
