Italian football great Alessandro Del Piero appears to have swapped one of the England players for former international Shaun Wright-Phillips during the Channel 4 live broadcast. meeting of the League of Nations on Friday evening.
Del Piero was part of a select TV station and offered an Italian perspective on England’s trip to Milan.
After a torrid first half, Del Piero – along with former England internationals Joe Cole and Eniola Aluka – had little to talk about as neither team enjoyed many chances in a repeat of the Euro 2020 final 14 months ago.
However, Del Piero soon attracted criticism when he appeared to mix up one of the starting XIs with former England winger Wright-Phillips, whose last of his 36 international caps came in 2010.
Del Piero tried to explain where Italy’s chances came from, saying: “All the time when England try to get away, we press very well. We had some counter-attacks, especially when Wright-Phillips lost the ball and [we’re] anticipating in this way.”
