“Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged with a breach of the FA’s E3 Rule following an incident which took place after Manchester United FC’s Premier League match against Everton FC on Saturday 9 April 2022. It is alleged that the forward’s behavior following the final whistle was inappropriate and/or violent.” reads the FA’s statement.

“We are taking note of the FA’s notice in relation to Cristiano Ronaldo,” United added. “We will support the player in his response to the allegation.”

The incident five months ago was publicized on social media and Merseyside Police confirmed that Ronaldo had been questioned under caution in connection with a charge of assault and criminal damage.

Ronaldo voluntarily attended police questioning and took to social media to apologize for his “outburst”, inviting the young fan involved to watch the match at Old Trafford. The police considered the matter closed, and the FA also launched an investigation.

“It’s never easy to deal with emotions in difficult times like the one we’re facing,” he posted to his 482 million followers on the social media platform. “Nevertheless, we must always be respectful, patient and be an example to all young people who love the beautiful game.

“I would like to apologize for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this fan to watch the game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair play and sportsmanship.”
