At least 13 people, including five children, have been killed in a shooting at a school in central Russia.

A gunman wearing a black T-shirt “with Nazi symbols and a balaclava” opened fire at a school in the city of Izhevsk before turning the gun on himself, investigators said.

The Russian Investigative Committee announced: “Nine people were killed as a result of this crime, including two security guards of an educational institution and two teachers, as well as five minors.”

It added that the attacker “committed suicide” and that, according to investigators, he was “wearing a black T-shirt with Nazi symbols and a balaclava” and had no ID.

“His identity is currently being established.”

The TASS news agency reports that the death toll has meanwhile risen to 13.

The Russian Ministry of the Interior also announced that in the attack on school no. 88 in Iževsk, around 20 people were injured.

The governor of the region, Alexander Brechalov, confirmed in front of the building that there were “victims and wounded” among the children.

In the background, paramedics and medical personnel could be seen working at the scene, with some running inside the school on stretchers.

The city of Izhevsk, with a population of about 630,000, is the regional capital of the Russian Udmurt Republic, located about 620 miles east of Moscow.
