Duchess from Sussex was praised for her “eloquent” discussion of the negative portrayal of women of Asian descent in Hollywood films.

Meghan explored the “Dragon Lady” stereotype with journalist Lisa Ling and a comedian. Margaret Cho in the fourth episode of her Archetypes series.

She also called out films such as Austin Powers and Kill Bill for presenting caricatures of Asian women as overly sexualized or aggressive.

Asian-American theater organization East West Players said such portrayals have “very real and harmful consequences” and “often exoticize or otherize” the Asian community.

In a statement to the PA news agency, Snehal Desai, producing artistic director at East West Players, said: “Stereotypes about Asians, particularly women of Asian descent, are not new.

“These depictions have had a tremendous impact on our community because for a long time there hasn’t been an opportunity for our community to be truly portrayed.

“With these stereotypes, the Asian community was and is often exoticized or different.”

“Organizations such as East West Players have combated these negative portrayals by elevating Asian representation on stage with the hope that audiences will learn to see the talent and abilities of our community before defining us solely by our heritage or color skin.

“We are working to combat the ‘otherness’ that Margaret Cho and Lisa Ling so eloquently discussed with the Duchess, as it has very real and damaging consequences, particularly for our community.”

East West Players was the first professional Asian-American theater organization founded in the United States to help provide opportunities and education about Asian culture.

93-year-old actor James Hong was one of its founding members.

In an episode of Archetypes, Meghan said: “Dragon Lady, an East Asian seductress whose mysterious alien allure is scripted to be both alluring and deadly, that seeped into a lot of our entertainment.

“But this toxic stereotyping of Asian women doesn’t end when the credits roll.”

Meghan’s Spotify series resumed on Tuesday after a four-week hiatus following the Queen’s death.
