Energy bill calculator: calculate the cost of your household appliances

A harsh winter is coming as energy costs skyrocket – in addition to double-digit inflation. Prime Minister Liz Truss has capped average energy bills at £2,500 until October 2024, scrapping regulator Ofgem’s often criticized price cap.

The regulator’s cap is due to rise from £1,971 to £3,549 a year in October. However, the latest intervention, along with former chancellor Rishi Sunak’s £400 rebate, means the average household should pay no more than £2,100 over 12 months.

The cap sets out how much energy companies can charge households per unit of electricity or gas at the “standard variable tariff”. This is extrapolated to £2,500 based on average consumption, but households will pay much more if they have above-average energy consumption.
