People suffering from arthritis have to deal with a lot of discomfort on a daily basis. Joint pain and stiffness hinder movement and interfere with daily activities. Although there is no cure for this medical condition, there are steps you can take to control the symptoms. On World Arthritis Day, let’s take a look at some Ayurvedic treatments that can help people deal with arthritis symptoms like joint pain and swelling.
How can Ayurveda help treat arthritis?
The ancient Indian practice of Ayurveda uses a natural, holistic approach to treat health problems. Some Ayurvedic doctors treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) also known as “Amavata” in Ayurveda. Exercise, dietary changes, and supplements are potential parts of an Ayurvedic regimen.
To find out how Ayurveda helps treat arthritis, Health Shots turned to Dr. Chaitali Deshmukh, Doctor of Ayurveda, who explained that followers of ‘Madhava Nidana’ principles believe that rheumatoid arthritis is caused by inflammatory substances and intestinal abnormalities. On the other hand, followers of the “Ashtanga Hridaya” school of thought believe that poor diet and lifestyle choices that lead to inflammation in the body are what cause RA. For a symptom of RA relief, both strategies use herbs, supplements, dietary changes, and exercise.
Here are some Ayurvedic remedies for arthritis:
1. Improve digestion
Dr. Deshmukh says, “Since Ama and Vata (Ayurvedic doshas or impairments) are major contributors to arthritis, a long-term treatment plan for the condition must include intensive methods to digest Ama and reduce Vata. Over time, digestion should gradually improve, reducing Ama formation and eventually eliminating it completely.” He suggests that fasting can help improve Ama’s digestion.
2. Regular exercise
Intense exercise is not recommended for arthritis patients, but for some less strenuous exercises should be included to improve joint mobility. An Ayurvedic doctor suggests that simple exercises should be added to daily Ayurvedic treatments. Depending on limitations, the volume and intensity of exercise may vary from person to person.
3. Citrus fruits and vegetables
Dr. Deshmukh explains how important vitamin C is for arthritis patients. Vitamin C is thought to reduce bone discomfort experienced by arthritis patients. So if you include lots of citrus fruits like orange and amla in your diet, you will reduce the pain.

4. Herbs
Guggal, often called Commiphora wightii, is a powerful herb for arthritis relief. “Guggal can be taken in amounts of 1-3 grams, twice a day, with warm water and shortly after a meal, depending on availability,” says Dr. Deshmukh. However, he goes on to warn that Guggal is not recommended for people with allergies or kidney problems, so keep that in mind.
According to Ayurveda, here are some anti-inflammatory foods for arthritis patients:
1. Ginger
Ginger helps in the treatment of many rheumatic, neurological and musculoskeletal diseases, so people with arthritis should always include it in their diet. The doctor recommends taking 5 grams of ginger three times a day to help improve digestion and reduce Ama production.

2. Turmeric
One of the main components of turmeric is curcumin. “Curcumin has powerful anti-inflammatory properties that help arthritis patients walk better and reduce morning stiffness and joint swelling,” says Dr. Deshmukh. So try to include turmeric in your diet by consuming it with milk or adding a pinch to gravy and rice.

3. Garlic
Garlic is a common ingredient in many Ayurvedic medicines, especially those that treat arthritis and significantly reduce its symptoms. Garlic is particularly effective in reducing arthritic pain. According to experts, prostaglandins can help control inflammation and associated pain.
