James Cleverly condemned the anonymous Tories for criticizing Liz Truss after her appearance before the 1922 committee.

The Prime Minister spoke to Conservative backbench MPs last night as she tried to stabilize her position as Prime Minister, but Mrs Truss clearly failed to win over her critics with a series of Tory briefings against her.

One MP told the Daily Mail it was “like someone trying to start a fire with a magnifying glass, using damp wood in the dark”, while another told ITV they “really have no idea how [Liz Truss] the math will add up on October 31st’ and ‘I’m worried I don’t think she does either’.

Mr Cleverly, the foreign secretary, attacked the rebels this morning, telling Sky News: “Look, some people like quotable tweets and some people like good governance.

“I’m in the camp of people who like to deliver good government. I know the chancellor, the prime minister and my ministerial colleagues are focused on delivering for the British people.”

It comes as Ms Truss comes under increasing Tory pressure to raise corporation tax to reassure markets about her debt reduction plan after ruling out major spending cuts.
