Arsenal maintain their flawless start and heap misery on Reading

Arsenal’s injury problems have not hindered results so far. On paper, Reading were probably the best possible opposition – winless in their last 12 league games before Sunday night and with just five shots on goal in their opening two WSL games.

That lack of threat was evident in the first half and Arsenal broke through on the half-hour mark when captain Kim Little turned and laid off to striker Stina Blackstenius, who took a second touch to curl her shot into the bottom corner.

A series of chances from Arsenal at the start of the second half could have turned it into a goal. They hit the post twice – Katie McCabe’s cross deflected off the keeper and Blackstenius’ header – before referee Louise Saunders rightly awarded Arsenal a penalty when Lily Woodham’s hand swung Beth Mead’s cross. But Little’s penalty was poorly saved by Jacqueline Burns, making her league debut for Reading, to keep them within reach.

In the final 20 minutes, Reading looked more likely to score as well, with Rachel Rowe hitting the post from a corner, Natasha Dowie should have done better with a half-volley, and her header was also saved by Arsenal substitute Frida Manuum. It was the closest Reading came to ending their miserable run of form, marking their fourth straight defeat at home in front of a club record crowd of 3,660, and they remain second bottom of the table.
