Ms Rowberry, who has been a member of the organization for the past 15 years, explained that charities were sometimes allowed to make gifts to the royal household and asked the security team to check.

“They looked a bit confused when I said that, but they went to check,” she said.

About ten minutes later a member of staff came to the door to personally collect the honey from Mrs Rowberry.

“The head of the household told him he had to deliver it because it was going to be on the royal breakfast table the next morning. And that was great. I was really pleased with that,” she said.

Ms Rowberry added that she spoke to a police officer as she left the building, who initially barred her from entering the palace.

“He said to me, ‘I can’t believe what just happened. I can’t believe you just took a gift through that door. That’s never happened in the 23 years I’ve been here,'” she said.

Mrs Rowberry, from Bath, then went to the House of Commons to present another glass of honey to her constituency MP Weri Hobhouse.

A few weeks later, Mrs Rowberry received a letter from the royal secretary thanking her for the “generous gift”. The letter said the king was “very touched” by the gift and enjoyed the honey.

National Honey Day takes place on October 21. This is the first year it has been celebrated in the UK.
