Boris Johnson Ukraine blast: Ex-PM claims Germany wanted country to break up quickly after Russian invasion, France ‘in denial’ until troops moved in

  • In his remarks, Boris Johnson singled out the three most prominent EU countries
  • The former prime minister says France was “in denial” until Russian troops crossed the border
  • He says that opinions on the tensions between the two countries were different

Boris Johnson proposed Germany wanted the quick defeat of Ukraine – while France was ‘denied’ until Russian troops crossed the border.

The former prime minister said there were differing opinions on the tensions between the warring countries before the February 24 invasion.

He singled out three of the EU’s most prominent nations in explosive statements in an interview with CNN.

Mr Johnson said: ‘The German view at one stage was that if this were to happen, which would be a disaster, then it would be better to get it over with quickly and for Ukraine to collapse. I thought that was a catastrophic view of it. But I can understand why they thought that.’

The former prime minister said opinions on tensions between the warring countries had varied before the February 24 invasion.

Germany has sought to reduce its dependence on Russian energy since Putin’s invasion, but the country still faces a winter of potential blackouts and announced a £173bn energy bailout in September. Mr Johnson added: “You have no doubt that the French denied everything until the last moment.”

French President Emmanuel Macron has been criticized for his handling of the crisis – visiting the Kremlin just weeks before the attack on Ukraine.

Mr Johnson also said that the Italian government under Mario Draghi “simply said at some stage that they would not be able to support the position that we have taken” – despite previously telling La Repubblica newspaper that they faced each other on this issue.

He again linked Italy’s reluctance to the country’s dependence on Russian gas. But the former prime minister said the West quickly realized that Putin was non-negotiable and that a united front was needed.

He said “the EU has done a great job” since the invasion, adding: “After all my concerns… I have respect for how the EU has handled it.”

A spokesman for the German government declined to comment, while the Elysee did not respond to requests. Sources close to former Italian Prime Minister Draghi have been approached for comment.

Mr Johnson added: ¿You have no doubt that the French were in denial until the last moment.¿ Macron is meeting with President Zelensky in June.

It came as pro-Kremlin military experts announced last night that Russia could withdraw from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant after months of constant shelling.

A host of Russian bloggers with close ties to the Putin regime have said they believe Moscow is ready to hand over the Ukrainian facility seized in March to the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Rybar, a popular Telegram channel that correctly predicted when Kherson would return to Ukrainian control, said the transfer of the city had been discussed. He added that Russian nuclear power giant Rosatom is fighting to maintain the site.

The Ukrainian presidential office declined to comment on the reports.
