Emma added that more representation was needed within roles in the entertainment industry to drive “greater urgency” in addressing the topic.

The Crown star asked: ‘When it comes to the categories, do we have to specify whether you’re nominated for a female role or a male role?’

“You can have a discussion there about awards and representation, but really the conversation has to be about more representation in the material itself, in the content that we see for non-binary people, for queer people, for trans people, because then I think that’s going to be a lot changed.

“Once these parts come out, which means more people and more actors playing these roles, I think these issues will be addressed more urgently.”

Emma publicly identifies as non-binary as of 2021and has shared his journey with his gender identity publicly on social media.

The thespian said Today’s program: ‘Your gender identity has a lot to do with how you feel and it has to do with how you want to be seen or how people see you, and that can be very upsetting or it can make you uncomfortable if you don’t feel they see fairly or correctly.

”I think I had to be open and honest about it, because otherwise I would have felt like I was being misconstrued.”

They're not worried: The film star added that they weren't worried that being open about their gender identity would limit the range of roles they'd be offered in the future.

“Being non-binary is not a rejection of femininity or my femininity in any way. It’s kind of an embrace of it.

‘I still want to play women, my experience in this world has been a woman – and now it’s kind of very fluid.’
