Research published last week by Placemake.io, based on anonymized phone data, found a sharp increase in activity in city centers from Tuesday to Thursday, suggesting that workers are choosing to stay home on Monday and Friday.
In October 2021, City AM itself published a newspaper entitled “Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays” when it announced that the city had received a new acronym.
However, bosses insisted the paper would continue to be published on Monday to reach “committed” readers.
City AM has also felt the impact of the recent rail strikes, which forced the company to extend its traditional Christmas printing break into January.
Along with rivals such as the Evening Standard and Metro, it also struggles with higher newsprint and distribution costs.
Despite this, City AM said the title had returned to almost 100 per cent of its pre-Covid circulation following its return to print in September 2021. The publication suspended print in March 2020 and cut staff salaries in half a month later when the pandemic forced the UK to shut down.
It also started distribution in commuter hotspots further out of London to reach more urban professionals. It currently reaches about 80,000 people a day.
City AM has announced that it will now publish an expanded Thursday edition, which will feature an expanded sports and lifestyle section.
It will also introduce new print and online features, including a feature-length weekly interview and a daily diary of prominent city figures, as well as two new podcasts and three revamped newsletters.
Mr Silvester added: “There was a lot of skepticism when we brought the paper back in September 2021 – but we have been delighted with the response and the paper is thriving for the first four days of the week.
“London may be changing, but City AM will remain at its heart – both in print and online.”
