Kenny did not mention next year’s Paris Olympics in his post. It is unclear if she will return to the track.

In the same Instagram story, Kenny wrote that it’s been exactly a year since she was taken to the ER for an ectopic pregnancy. “One year ago today, I was in the emergency room knowing I was really bad, but I didn’t know what was wrong with me,” she said.

“When I got the news that I had an ectopic pregnancy, my world felt like it came crashing down. We lost our second child in November and I remember laying there looking for some kind of answers.

“I still feel that broken heart to this day and I don’t think it will ever go away.”

Kenny is Britain’s most successful female Olympian with five Olympic gold medals and silver from three Olympics. Husband Jason is Team GB’s most successful Olympian of all time after winning his ninth medal and seventh gold on the final day of Tokyo 2020.

Analysis: What does this mean for Paris 2024?

After winning gold in Madison and silver in the team pursuit in Tokyo in 2021, at the age of 29, it would seem inconceivable that Britain’s golden girl would not return to Paris three years later and add to her massive medal collection.

But Kenny has since endured a very traumatic 18 months – a miscarriage followed by an ectopic pregnancy that left her on the verge of giving up the sport altogether.

Kenny cycled at the Commonwealth Games last summer and even won gold in scratching. But admitted later that she felt “lost” and “lack of motivation”.

There was no mention of Paris 2024 in Kenny’s Instagram post on Wednesday and sources close to her insist no decision has yet been made. Kenny is focusing all his energy and attention on the pregnancy, which is understandable. British Cycling, who only told her in recent days, will not rush her.

But assuming everything goes smoothly and she’s so ready, Kenny will have just about enough time to get back. The 30-year-old said in her post that she’s already ‘showing off’, which means she’ll probably be coming some time this summer, about a year from Paris.

It is clear that this August’s World Track Championships in Glasgow would be too soon for a return. But her teammates can get the necessary qualification points for Paris.

Should Kenny then feel motivated for another crack, she would likely opt for the 2024 Nations Cup in Hong Kong next March to return to elite competition.

That’s a long way off. For now, British sport and her many fans will only wish her good health and happiness.
