The final day of the Women’s Super League season could be moved to avoid clashing with the final Men’s Premier League games, which are currently being played on the same afternoon, according to Telegraph Sport.
The Football Association – which runs the WSL – has discussed the idea with broadcasters, according to multiple sources, and those talks have been described as positive. All parties are keen to ensure the WSL Finals get the exposure and platform the organizers feel it deserves.
The final matches in the women’s top flight are currently scheduled for Sunday 28 May, the same day the season in the men’s top flight ends. A final decision has yet to be made, but the previous day, Saturday 27 May, is now believed to be the most likely date if the WSL fixtures are to be moved – and the likelihood of that happening is increasing.
All 10 Men’s Premier League games will kick off at 4pm on the 28th, with the men’s domestic season ending slightly later than usual in May due to the Qatar 2022 World Cup being held in the winter.
All six WSL final day matches are tentatively set for a 2pm kick-off on the same day, although it was always likely that this would be moved to midday for transmission purposes. In recent weeks, however, there has been talk of moving it to a full 24 hours.
It is understood that organizers want to ensure that fans of the Men’s Premier League who attend matches can also attend their club’s WSL final day matches in person. The attention the competition will receive in the wider media is also understood to be a factor being considered, with the Premier League likely to dominate the agenda on the 28th and overshadow most of the other sporting coverage that afternoon.
The race for the WSL title has come down to the final day of the campaign in both of the past two seasons and could once again end in the wire, with defending champions Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City all in a realistic fight. Chelsea, United and Arsenal are currently separated by just three points, with the latter two having a game in hand against Chelsea, meaning all three could potentially go level on points next month.
Of the WSL teams that also have a Premier League side, Arsenal are the only club to be at home in both competitions on the final day of the season.
