Prince William41, met the innovators for the first time at the Earthshot Prize Fellowship Retreat at Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park, part of the Earthshot Prize Fellowship Programme.

The father-of-three looked comfortable in a sharp jumpsuit, keeping warm with a blue jacket as he chatted with each of the finalists at this year’s awards, which took place in Boston in December, asking them how he could help them achieve their goals.

The Prince of Wales’ afternoon was followed by a morning visit to a food bank in Windsor, where he and the Princess of Wales met with staff and helped sort the donated food items into categories.

He spoke with Min Wang, whose company Desert Agricultural Transformation turns desert sand into farmland.

She invited William to visit one of her project locations in China.

He said, “If I pass by, I will visit all your projects. I’ve given notice to my team.’

He added: ‘So I’ll still be attending Earthshot projects until I’m 10.’

Then he met Charlotte Magayi, whose company Mukuru makes clean and reliable cooktops for low-income households in western Kenya.

Magayi grew up in Mukuru, the third largest slum in Kenya. Her business focuses on providing clean stoves to families who are less likely to be exposed to harmful air pollution in their homes.

William gave her a particularly warm welcome.

‘Congratulations,’ he said. ‘The last time I saw you, you were surrounded by children. Your story is incredible.”

Speaking to the PA news agency, Mrs Magayi said: “I started my business in 2017 because my daughter was burnt by a traditional oven.

“I grew up in a slum in Kenya and that’s why my company is called Mukuru.

‘So I wanted to create a stove for my community, and then we made it and it just blew up.’

William went to private group meetings with the finalists, where they talked to him about their hopes and ambitions for the coming year.

As part of the meeting, participants will hear speeches from Christiane Figueres, former UN climate chief and president of The Earthshot Prize, and Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, environmental activist, geographer and member of The Earthshot Prize Council.

Later this week, participants will travel to London to attend a forum at Deloitte and have the opportunity to meet with advisors and potential investors for their projects.

During the Earthshot 2022 Awards in Boston, the prince of wales emphasized the importance of the project in finding innovative solutions to the harmful effects of climate change.

He said: ‘I believe the Earthshot solutions you have seen tonight prove that we can overcome our planet’s greatest challenges.

And with support and growth, we can change our future.

‘Beyond tonight’s winners and finalists, and those we’ll discover in the years to come, I hope Earthshot’s legacy continues to grow and help our communities and our planet thrive.’

Ending the evening with optimism, the Prince concluded: ‘In the same way that space endeavors six decades ago created jobs, boosted economies and provided hope, so too can the solutions of tonight’s Earthshot award winners.

‘The decisions we make now will affect future generations, so we must choose a path of hope, optimism and urgency to fix our planet.’
