“In my opinion, it was acting. There’s no need to roll around and hold your face,” Skinner said. “You want to see passion for your club, it’s a foul, probably a yellow card. Of course we have to be responsible for our actions and we’ll assess that internally.
But you don’t have to roll around holding your face, that’s a part of the game that I don’t want to come into our game. This is an obvious pressure on the shoulder. It’s just not a good sign on my part.
“Without a doubt [Toone] it will bounce back. The thing we all love about Tooney is that it’s very real. Once we’ve all calmed down, we’ll assess what’s going to happen and take our role. Something should not be reprimanded for showing passion. If it’s an act of violence, we’ll judge, but I want to see that fight all the time in my team because it’s exciting.”
In a post on social media, Toone said: “I’m proud of the passion and love I have when I play for this club and I’m holding my hands for my reaction and I’ll learn from it. Proud of the team.”
With Manchester United down a man, Tottenham Hotspurs pushed hard for an equalizer in the last 15 minutes of the game and England were denied by Mary Earps sending a number of searching passes into the box. Much to Skinner’s relief, however, his team was able to hold on for the win.
At this point in the season, every point seems to be crucial in the title race and anything other than a win over Tottenham would put Chelsea firmly in the lead heading into the final third of the season.
Emma Hayes and her team have stepped up this weekend (as the game was postponed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth) but they could have finished the weekend as league leaders without lifting a finger. Instead, three points at Tottenham United saw Arsenal leapfrog – who lost to Manchester City on Saturday – and remain the team most likely to challenge Hayes’ side for the league title.
“We had to win today, that’s the pressure we put on ourselves, but we don’t expect anything, we have to earn it,” Skinner said. “It’s nice to be at the top of the table, but look at the teams. I love coming back to this country because there’s going to be so many more upheavals.”
This was by no means a vintage United performance. They had the best chances in a goalless first half, notably Leah Galton’s disallowed offside goal, but Ashleigh Neville and Bethany England also nearly combined for Tottenham in the first half.
United’s Galton broke the deadlock in the 67th minute when he controlled Ona Batlle’s cross to volley home from close range and it looked like they were on course for a clean sweep.
