Fasting for Mahashivratri? Make these 5 door recipes without salt


One of the biggest Hindu festivals MahaShivratri is here. It is a day dedicated to the god Shiva and it is believed that fasting on this day can help achieve spiritual upliftment and inner peace. Hence, many devotees celebrate this auspicious festival with great enthusiasm and devotion, offering prayers to Lord Shiva and fasting. People fast all day or eat certain foods with or without salt. While there are many foods that you can prepare at home for your fast, we have some recipes for fasting without salt for MahaShivratri.

HealthShots turned to a dietitian and nutritionist, Avni Kaulwho shared something with us fasting recipes which are healthy and can be made without salt.

Here are 5 fasting recipes for Maha Shivratri that you can enjoy without salt:

1. Sabudana khichdi

Sabudana khichdi is a popular fasting food in India, especially during festivals like Navratri and Mahashivratri. Made with sago pearls, peanuts and potatoes, it is a delicious and filling dish that is easy to digest. The dish can be seasoned with cumin, black pepper and other spices that are allowed during fasting, making it a perfect meal for the occasion. Since it is gluten-free, it is highly recommended for people who want to lose weight and have diabetes.

2. Potato curry

Potatoes are the main ingredient of fasting food and a simple salt free potato curry can be a great option for MahaShivratri. Cooked with ginger, green chillies and other permitted spices, it can be served with puri or kuttu ki roti. Avoid frying potatoes as this will increase the fat content. Eat them boiled or fry them before eating.

3. Fruit salad

4. Samvat rice

Samvat rice, also known as millet, is a gluten-free grain that is allowed during fasting. It is a nutritious and easily digestible food that can be prepared in pulao or biryani with vegetables and spices that are allowed during fasting. Rice pulao or dhokla can be prepared with samvat rice.

5. Sweet potato chaat

Sweet potatoes are a good source of carbohydrates and are allowed during fasting. Sweet potato chaat is a delicious and healthy snack that can be prepared without salt. Boil the sweet potato, cut it into small cubes, add lemon juice, black pepper and rock salt to taste.
