It is understood that this new task force met for the first time on Thursday and their task is simple, if not easy: to decide what the future of the WSL and the Championship should be and how the company that will ultimately run these leagues will operate. .

The inclusion of so many senior, high-profile CEOs and directors of men’s clubs will attract attention.

Historically, many such discussions have been relegated to staff working exclusively for the women’s football arms of these clubs, such as the general managers of their women’s teams or women’s team presidents. The involvement of some of the industry’s key players shows just how much more seriously the Premier League’s most powerful men’s clubs are taking the issue.

Significantly, London City Lionesses’ Diane Culligan and Lewes chief executive Maggie Murphy were also included, representing clubs not affiliated with the men’s Premier League giants. Their voices at the table – along with Parish and Southampton’s Martin Semmens – see four clubs from the current Women’s Championship represented on the panel rather than just the WSL sides.

But why is all this happening? In principle, the FA runs the WSL and the Championship, but does not hide the fact that it does not intend to do so in the long term. The FA’s plan was to create a new, separate entity – perhaps similar to the Premier League or the EFL in terms of organization – to independently run the two top leagues in the women’s game. This new company (NewCo) will seek new financial investment in the divisions and could theoretically one day be sold to a private equity firm.

Campbell said last summer that he hoped to have this new company in place by early 2023, but it is understood that the formation of this company has been delayed because the 24 clubs in the WSL and the Championship have very different ideas about how the company should be set up .

For example, what stake, if any, should FA have in this new company? Should all 24 existing clubs have an equal share? Who would be on the committee? And – perhaps more importantly for fans – what should the two leagues actually look like? Should they be expanded to include more teams? Should they be run as a franchise system similar to MLS or America’s top women’s league, the NWSL? Or should they retain the traditional structure of promotion and relegation that many involved are so passionate about?

These are all things that this task force will discuss when working on a business plan for a new company. Whatever they decide, the 2024-25 season could see English women’s top-flight football operate very differently.
