NASA warned that a city-destroying asteroid the size of the Leaning Tower of Pisa could hit Earth on Valentine’s Day 2046.
2023 DW, confirmed on February 28th, has a one in 560 chance of hitting on February 14th at 4:44pm ET – but where it will land is not yet known.
Projected areas of impact range from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and from the West to the East Coast of the US – with Los AngelesHawaii and Washington DC as options.
A collision of the 165-meter DW 2023 with our planet would be comparable to the Tunguska 12-megaton event that crashed into Siberia 114 years ago.
This 160-meter asteroid caused a nuclear explosion that would have destroyed a large metropolitan area – but it landed in a forest, flattening more than 80 million trees.

NASA announced the discovery of the 2023 DW on Tuesday, noting that it “needs several weeks of data to reduce uncertainties and adequately predict their orbits years into the future.”
The probability of an asteroid hitting Earth has changed over the past week.
On March 1, an Italian astronomer shared with NASA a one-in-12,000 chance, but a day later the odds increased to one-in-710 — and now it’s one-in-560.
From March 7, 2023, the analysis of its orbit was only 62 observations covering 6.8487 days until March 4, 2023.
2023 DW is currently at the top of NASA’s risk list with a 1 on the Turin scale – meaning there is currently no cause for public concern.
“Routine discovery involving a near-Earth pass that does not present an unusual level of hazard,” reads the description on the Turin scale.
Current calculations indicate that the possibility of a collision is very unlikely, with no cause for public attention or public concern. New telescope observations will very likely lead to a reassignment to level 0.’
“Orbital analysts will continue to monitor asteroid 2023 DW and update predictions as more data arrives,” NASA tweeted.

While the 2023 DW is 1, it could reach 10, labeled ‘Certain collisions.’
“The collision is certain and could cause a global climate catastrophe that could threaten the future of civilization as we know it, whether it affects land or ocean,” the description reads.
‘Such events happen on average once every 100,000 years or less often.’
However, NASA notes that it will alert the public if the 2023 DW reaches 3 on the scale.
The last major strike was on February 15, 2013, known as Chelyabinsk.
A 60-foot-wide meteor struck Earth’s atmosphere with an energy estimated at 500,000 tons of TNT, sending a shock wave around the world twice.
It caused extensive damage and injured more than 1,600 people.
And 2023 DW is more than twice as big.
NASA recently confirmed that it can deflect a killer asteroid from its path towards Earth in 2021 after a successful DART mission.

The agency launched its Double Asteroid Redirect Test (DART) in 2022 for humanity’s first planetary defense mission, which NASA has dubbed the ‘Armageddon moment’.
The craft’s destination was a moon called Dimorphos, which orbits its parent asteroid Didymos.
On September 26, the world watched as DART flew at 15,000 miles per hour toward Dimorphos to push it out of its orbit.
And on March 1, 2023, NASA confirmed that the mission was a resounding success.
The space agency’s refrigerator-sized satellite managed to shorten the orbit of the 520-foot-wide asteroid by 33 minutes — nearly five times more than predicted.
Scientists from Northern Arizona University said: “This serves as a proof of concept for the kinetic warhead technique of planetary defense, DART had to demonstrate that an asteroid can be a target during a rapid encounter and that the orbit of the target can be changed.’
