The ring, which he revealed he personally selected and presented to Ms Smith on March 17, is said to be “the best of the best”.
Mrs Smith, 66, a widow who is wealthy in her own right, was spotted with a sparkler as they arrived in Los Angeles airport this week.

The ring (pictured here), which Murdoch revealed he personally selected and presented to Ms Smith on March 17, is worth up to £2 million.
“A similar ring is being auctioned at Sotheby’s for £1 million and could retail for £2 million.
‘It’s interesting that it’s so traditional. The invincibility of the diamond as a stone is related to the idea of eternal love.
“It suggests it was given by an old-fashioned romantic.
“It’s the biggest diamond you could wear every day.
“If you get engaged at this point in your life, she’ll want to wear things, not lock them in a safe.”
Ms Smith was also seen wearing a vintage gold Rolex watch, a diamond necklace and large silver hoops.
She also wore a gold cross necklace on a long diamond chain.
Ms Woolton added: ‘This is the style of a woman who loves gold and jewels. These are pieces that mean something to her.
‘Jewellery shows her style more than anything else.
‘She looks like a woman who enjoys jewelery – a bit of gold, things she already had in her jewelery box and is comfortable wearing.’
Ms Smith was introduced to the newly single billionaire at a wine event at his Moraga, California vineyard in September and he waited a fortnight before asking to see her again.
Media mogul Murdoch, who is said to be worth $17 billion (£13.7 billion), told his newspaper the New York Post: “I was very nervous. I was afraid of falling in love – but I knew it would be mine last. It would be better. I’m happy.’

Mrs Smith said: “It’s been a godsend for both of us. We met last September.
‘I have been a widow for 14 years. Like Rupert, my husband was a businessman. He worked for local newspapers, developed radio and television stations, and helped promote Univision. So I speak Rupert’s language. We share the same beliefs.
“To put it in perspective, this is not my first rodeo. Approaching 70 means being in the last half. I was waiting for the right time. My friends are happy for me.”
Murdoch’s last marriage to supermodel Jerry Hall ended abruptly last July, with the divorce finalized within five weeks. They were married for six years.
He was previously married to media executive Wendi Deng, with whom he has daughters Grace and Chloe.
He was married to journalist Anna Torv from 1967 to 1999 and they had children Liz, James and Lachlan. He was previously married to flight attendant Patricia Booker and they had a daughter, Patience.

It emerged last week that Mrs Smith, who also owns the vineyard, was at loggerheads with her late husband’s family. They were accused of “financial elder abuse” and said she withheld $1 million (£800,000) owed to each of his three daughters. The case was resolved in 2010.
In pictures from Los Angeles, Murdoch wears a cap with the legend “Proud American”.
Murdoch’s Fox News is currently defending a lawsuit filed by voting machine company Dominion that claims several Fox anchors promoted a false narrative suggesting the 2020 election was stolen from former President Donald Trump.
Murdoch himself appeared in court at the end of February and said that ‘in hindsight’ he wished Fox had been more forceful in condemning the allegations.
