The Football Association has admitted it was an “error of judgement” to publish social media posts referring to Women’s Super League players as “Barbies”, which was planned as a marketing ploy to coincide with the release of a trailer for the new “Barbie” film. .
The posts have since been deleted after some social media users took issue with the reference to Barbie, although some other fans seemed to like the concept.
England and Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps, Chelsea and Australia striker Sam Kerr and this season’s WSL top scorer, Jamaica and Manchester City striker Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, were among those named in an announcement by WSL officials on Wednesday morning. The WSL is run by the FA, and the league’s official account says, “These Barbies are WSL icons!”
A picture of Earps read “This Barbie has kept 11 clean sheets this season”, while Kerr’s image was accompanied by “This Barbie scored her 50th Barclays WSL goal at the weekend”.
