Welcome to our coverage of one of tonight’s two Premier League games, Manchester United v Brentford at Old Trafford. Erik ten Haga’s men have come a long way since that 4-0 drubbing last August, which came after a home defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on the opening day of the season.

However, the last few months show that there is still a way to go. Yes, they are a team that won their first league trophy in six years with the League Cup, but the performances have dipped a bit and there have been some poor performances and results away from home.

Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park was a good example of this. Manchester United were second best in almost every area and a two-goal defeat was nothing less than Newcastle deserved as they took a big step towards their first top four finish in two decades.

It also showed how badly they missed some key players in midfield, notably the banned Casemiro and the injured Christian Eriksen. Although they are well placed in the Europa League and are actually favorites to win this competition, they need to ensure that their league form does not dip as they have slipped out of the Champions League places.

It is true that they have two games in hand against Tottenham, but the cushion they had a few months ago is now gone. Tonight would be the right time to get things going again after two defeats and one draw in their last three games.

Brentford, meanwhile, have been in decent form for some time. In fact, Thomas Frank’s side are fifth in the table from their last 10 games with 17 points – two ahead of Manchester United and a handy goal difference of plus seven. That form has been backed up by good results away and at home, so you certainly can’t rule out that they will come back to west London with something this evening.
