Women’s Super League bottom side Brighton & Hove Albion have appointed former London City Lionesses manager Melissa Phillips as their new manager on a two-and-a-half-year deal until the summer of 2025.

The relegation-threatened Sussex club have been searching for a new manager since March 6, when Jens Scheuer left his role by mutual consent. American coach Phillips, 35, has now taken over with seven WSL games remaining as the club tries to avoid occupying the sole relegation spot in the Premier League at the end of the season, with her first game in charge coming on Saturday, April 15, at the Women’s FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United.

“Melissa brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the women’s game, having previously coached Angel City, the London City Lionesses, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of San Francisco and California State Bakersfield,” Brighton said in a statement.

As recently as January, Phillips was announced as the new assistant coach of American NWSL club Angel City, based in Los Angeles. The appointment saw her leave London for a Californian club, but quickly returned to the English game when she accepted a job at Brighton. The London City Lionesses were propelled into contention for promotion to the WSL from the Championship.

Phillips added: “I’m excited to be here and eager to get started. It’s a great feeling to join this club and I’m looking forward to working with the team. I had positive talks with the club and I knew it was the right decision to return to England. I am fully aware of our position, but I am confident that we can grow and move up the ladder.”

Brighton Women’s Team Chairman Michelle Walder said: “We are very pleased to welcome Melissa as our new Head Coach of the Women’s First Team. He has a good knowledge of the game as well as some key experience to help us climb the ladder.

“[Caretaker manager] Amy Merricks has done a fantastic job in challenging circumstances over the last few weeks, allowing us to go through a thorough process to bring Melissa on board. Thanks to Amy, Perry Northeast and the rest of the team, we are looking forward to our FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United.”
