British big wave surfer Tom Lowe has been hospitalized with six broken ribs and internal bleeding after suffering a massive death in Tahiti.
The 39-year-old father of one was surfing the waves off the coast of Teahupo’o in southern Tahiti on Friday when he was thrown headfirst into the Pacific Ocean.
The video shows Lowe taking off late on a big wave before losing his balance and being thrown into the shallows, where sharp pieces of coral cut into his body.
Lowe, from St Ives, Cornwall, was nowhere to be seen when the huge wave crashed into him in the terrifying incident.
Those who watched in horror rushed to rescue the critically injured surfer from the water before he was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

Lowe underwent surgery and a blood transfusion after suffering six broken ribs, a broken shoulder blade and internal bleeding. His pregnant wife Tess and daughter Tigerlilly rushed to his bedside when they heard about the fatal accident.
“I feel really lucky that I made it,” Lowe wrote in an Instagram post.
“It was a tough day,” Lowe later told Surfline. ‘But I’m in one piece and I’ll be back, reborn and fighting fit.’
Lowe’s friend Greg Long has since set up GoFundMe page to help collect costs for the surfer’s “extensive” medical bills, as his insurance does not cover his treatment.
Long wrote: ‘During the recent huge wave at Teahupo’o, Tahiti, Tom suffered severe destruction.
The injuries he sustained when he hit the reef required him to be airlifted to hospital, where he underwent several emergency surgeries.
“He is currently in a stable condition but will need to remain under close observation in hospital for the next few days.”

Long said any donations will help Lowe and his family cover his medical expenses and support his rehabilitation process.
“Tom has been a dear friend for years,” Long wrote. ‘Anyone who has ever met Tom knows him as a humble, kind and talented surfer who is a devoted family man to his wife Tess, daughter Tigerlilly and baby-to-be.
Tom has a long way to go, but true to his nature, he is positive, has a fighting spirit and thanks from the bottom of his heart for all the love and support shown to him.
“It’s not in my nature to ask for handouts, and in this case, I don’t know what I would do without it,” Lowe said of the donations. So far, $36,000 (£28,800) has been raised.
“I am completely overwhelmed and humbled by the generosity and kindness that everyone has shown,” Lowe said. ‘Thank you for all your positive energy and thoughtful messages.’
