Emma Raducanu is set to miss the French Open and Wimbledon after deciding to undergo surgery on both wrists.

The 2021 US Open champion, who pulled out of her final match in Madrid last week just over three hours before her opening match, also confirmed she will undergo a separate procedure on her ankle which will see her on the sidelines for “months”, meaning that she might not be back in time for the final Grand Slam of the year in New York.

In a handwritten note posted on her Instagram page, Raducanu said: “I can say the last 10 months have been tough as I’ve been dealing with a recurring bone injury in both hands. I’ve been trying my best to manage the pain and play through most of this year and the end of last year by dramatically reducing the training load, skipping weeks of training and shortening the final season to try [to] get well. Unfortunately, it is not enough.

“I’m having minor surgery on both hands to fix the issues. I’m disappointed to say that I’ll be out for the next few months and in the meantime I’ll have another minor surgery on my ankle.

“It hurts me to miss the summer events and I tried to play down the issues, so I thank all my fans who continued to support me when you didn’t know the facts. I look forward to seeing you all again.”

More to come…
