King Charles will be crowned alongside the Queen today in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

The investiture is part of a long weekend full of celebrations for the new monarch, from street parties to concerts.

The king ascended the throne following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, last September, making him the oldest new monarch in British history.

Plans have since been revealed for the much-anticipated coronation weekend, codenamed Operation Golden Orb.

When is the royal coronation?

9 in the morning

The music before the coronation begins for the congregation in the abbey.

9.30-09.55

Heads of state and representatives of overseas governments arrive at the abbey.

Until 10 a.m

The monarch’s entourage will be in position at Buckingham Palace.

10 a.m

Procession of religious and ecumenical leaders through Westminster Abbey.

10:15 in the morning

Procession of the Commonwealth of Nations through Westminster Abbey.

10.20 in the morning

Their Majesties’ carriage procession leaves Buckingham Palace.

10:25 in the morning

Members of foreign royal families arrive at the Great West Door, Westminster Abbey.

10:35 in the morning

Members of the Royal Family arrive at the Great West Door, Westminster Abbey.

10:45 in the morning

The Prince and Princess of Wales arrive at the West Gate of Westminster Abbey with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

10:50 in the morning

The Equerry and the King’s Guards, together with the Equerry and the Guards and the Queen Consort’s attendants, arrive at the West Gate of Westminster Abbey, where they will await the arrival of Their Majesties.

Their Majesties’ carriage arrives at the great west gate of the Abbey. The State Trumpeters of the Household Cavalry, stationed at the Abbey, will sound a fanfare as Their Majesties arrive at the West Gate of Westminster Abbey.

The Royal Procession begins, led by the Cross of Wales.

The abbey bells are ringing.

11:00 in the morning

The coronation service begins.

Around 12 o’clock

At the point of coronation, fanfare will sound, the Abbey bells will toll for two minutes and the Royal Horse Artillery of the Royal Troop, mounted on Horse Guards Parade, will fire a gun salute. This will be accompanied by salutes at His Majesty’s Tower of London, fired by the Honorable Artillery Company, and at all salute stations throughout the UK, Gibraltar, Bermuda and ships at sea.

Around 1 p.m

The coronation procession departs from Westminster Abbey. The abbey bells will ring.

Around 1:45 p.m

Their Majesties will arrive on the West Terrace of Buckingham Palace, where they will be received by the United Kingdom and Commonwealth Armed Forces with a royal salute.

2:30 p.m

Organized by the Ministry of Defence, the Fly Past will take place over Buckingham Palace, with the Royal Family watching from the balcony.

What will happen at the coronation ceremony?

The King and Queen Consort will arrive at Westminster Abbey on a procession starting from Buckingham Palace known as the Royal Procession.

Their Majesties will be crowned at London Abbey in a service led by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Buckingham Palace said the ceremony would reflect the monarch’s role today and look to the future, while remaining rooted in long-standing traditions and luxury.
