In addition to its use on official occasions, the anthem is also less well known in the concert hall. Beethoven used it in perhaps his worst work, Wellington’s Victory. The “demon violinist” Paganini based a series of variations on it, as did the American composer Charles Ives; and the great German early Romantic composer, Carl Maria von Weber, quoted it in an overture to celebrate the Jubilee of the King of Saxony in 1818.
Why, you might ask? Because his audience would recognize the tune as a “Saxon” hymn. The global reach of our anthem reaches places you might not imagine, as well as places you would imagine. Therefore, despite its alleged blandness, it is truly unique among world hymns.
