No major British event goes by without the Royal Mint producing special issues of legal tender coins. We already had a 50p ‘double monarch’ coin minted to mark the arrival of King Charles with the bare-headed king on one side and the late queen on the other. The above five pound coin and the special 50p coin will be the first to feature His Majesty enthroned. As standard coins will not feature a crown, these may be the best souvenirs to invest in if Anita’s advice above makes sense.
Five pounds commemorative coin, which is still legal tender, is a proof coin: this means it is the highest quality coin produced by the Royal Mint in terms of sharpness, detail and finish. As well as the 50p and £5 coins, the Royal Mint’s official commemorative Coronation program will include an ounce range and even a one kilogram pure gold coin for £77,500. All are now available for purchase. The larger Sovereign collection will be launched later this year.
“Limited edition coins in silver and gold will retain their value over time,” says Anita Lo, although she cautions, “The market does fluctuate, so it may take some time to recoup the investment.”
Emma Bridgewater adds: “The Royal Mint issue is one of my favorite things. I’ve always really liked the idea that it’s money that’s really valuable.”
