As millions watched the newly crowned king and queen wave to the crowds at The Mall along with the rest of the royal family, Andoh left her. ITV stunned her co-stars with her comments, which some described as ‘creepy’.

The star, whose father was of Ghanaian descent, commented on ITV’s coverage of the live coronation he hosted Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham when she said of the event: ‘From the rich variety of the Abbey we came to the eerie white balcony.

‘It hurt me a lot.

“I also look at these younger generations and think, ‘What are the nuances that will inhabit them when they grow up?’

Andoh, 60, who plays Lady Danbury in Bridgerton, left co-star Myleene Klass, who sat next to her, looking confused as she made her comments.

In a rush to quickly quell any backlash, Andoh, speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Sunday Morning Show with Paddy O’Connell, said: “I think I upset a few people yesterday.

“I was talking about the day and how wonderful it was, and then I looked out on the balcony at the end and suddenly said, ‘Oh, it’s so white!’ because the day was so eventful and I didn’t want to upset anyone.’

Yesterday, social media erupted into a comment frenzy with one user saying: “Why is it ok to dismiss a white family because they’re white?”

Meanwhile, another added: “I’m disappointed with Adjoo Andoh. #Coronation focused on promoting positive race relations and representing modern Britain.

‘Yesterday there were many people from different backgrounds who held prominent positions but Adjoa chose to discriminate with her divisive comment.’

And a third said: ‘Why make such a horrible comment #whitebalcony?! Terrible.’

The Bridgerton star has faced criticism for her comments, with one calling them “appalling” and another saying they were “disappointing”.

But O’Connell rushed to the star’s defense on the morning radio show, saying: “You didn’t upset anyone.”

The Radio 4 presenter then quickly continued the conversation, turning to another guest, Simon Heffer, to ask him about Penny Mordaunt’s role at the coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla at Westminster Abbey.

The leader of the lower house of parliament presented the king with the 17th-century sword of state as Lord President of the Privy Council, a role he has held since September last year.

It was the first time in history that a bejeweled sacrificial sword was carried and presented to a monarch by a woman.

Today, the King, Queen and Royal Family will join around 20,000 members of the public at the Coronation Concert to see performances by Take That, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.

William and Kate are already appearing before the concert at Windsor Castle tonight at 8pm – and the Prince of Wales was even presented with a can of Crown Ale while walking with the Princess of Wales.
