Westminster City Council said it was “deeply concerned” by reports that three female security volunteers who had been providing rape alarms to people in Soho had been arrested in the early hours of the morning before the coronation.
The Metropolitan Police said the arrests were made at around 2am on Friday night after police received a tip-off that protesters were planning to use devices to disrupts the procession.
However, it has since been claimed that members of the council’s ‘Night Stars’ security team, which provides support for women on nights out, were arrested.
Westminster Council leader Adam Hug said he was “urgently calling for appropriate responses from the police” over the incident.
Labor councilor Aicha Less said she was “deeply concerned” by the reports and that volunteers were a “familiar and welcome sight” in the West End.
The three people who were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public disturbance were – a 37-year-old woman, a 59-year-old woman and a 47-year-old man. During the coronation, they were questioned at a police station in south London.
A man was also arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods, police said, and all three were released on bail pending further enquiries.
“Another black eye for Mark Rowley”
Mic Wright, the journalist who first broke the story after speaking to the three people when they were released from custody, said one of the suspects “left the station in tears”.
He added: “The Met arrested members of the City of Westminster Night Safety team. They are volunteers.”
Jamie Klinger, co-founder of Reclaim These Streets, tweeted: “The police have done nothing to make women safer and are now arresting their own volunteers working to protect women.
“Another black eye for (Met Police Commissioner) Mark Rowley.”
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Adelekan said: “The intelligence we received led us to be very concerned about the potential risk to public safety.
“We are aware and understand that the public is concerned about these arrests. However, the matter remains under investigation.”
